Art -A-Track: Discover railway related artwork from the museum’s collection. Railways have been a favourite subject for artists, including Monet and Turner, for over 150 years. Art-A-Track is an exhibition of artwork from the museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition covers three broad railway themes: locomotives and rolling stock, buildings and infrastructure and railway personalities in a variety of mediums.

The Great Train Robery: 30th October until 31st December 2013 - Museum Platform. This timely exhibition explores the events and impact of the Great Train Robbery fifty years on and the subsequent investigations that took place. The exhibition explores the robbery and its impact through previously unseen files and photographs. It will also look at the effects the robbery had on the GPO more widely. Until 30th March 2014 in the Museum and Temporary Exhibition Gallery: A ‘Cluster’ exhibition by Durham based artists and sculptors. As part of the celebrations associated with the 150th anniversary of the opening of North Road Works, Darlington, four local artists under the banner of ‘Cluster’ present a unique exhibition of contemporary work inspired by the area’s railway heritage, with new work for 2013. Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum has received £42,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a project, North Eastern Railways in World War One, in Darlington. The project will focus on the contribution of railway workers in the North East during the First World War.

A textile and media based exhibition exploring heritage and journeys travelled on the railways opens Tuesday 8th April. The journey begins from Darlington travelling around the Great British countryside exploring many stations towns and cities that were linked with this vital network of railways. A series of talks, events and workshops will accompany the exhibition.

Trains and Trenches, 1st August to 2nd November 2014. When Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914 it would be a move that affected everyone within British society. Using objects and archival material Trains to Trenches explores how Darlington and the North Eastern Railway (NER) served Britain throughout those troubling times. Discover the NER Battalion, Darlington’s ‘shell shop’ and the role played by local women in keeping the country going.

Heritage Open Days -Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September 2014 10am – 4pm Visit the museum and enjoy free entry as we participate in the national Heritage Open Days! The Friends of the Museum will be giving guided tours of the museum. Darlington Model Railway Club will be exhibiting some of their models and layouts at the museum. There will also be the opportunity to talk to rail heritage groups about the work that they do and what you can do to volunteer. On Saturday at 2pm, historian Stephen Nicholson will give a talk about ‘Darlington’s Railway Servicemen in the First World War’ – this talk is free, but booking is essential.

Right on Track: Saturday 11th October 2014 11am until 6pm
Right on Track will see the museum play host to a range of food and drink stalls, including local real ales. Bands and live performers from the region will provide music and entertainment throughout the day. There will be arts and crafts activities, face painters and a balloon modeller to keep children entertained. Local history and railway fans can enjoy talks and literature readings and the opportunity to ask experts any questions. FREE ENTRY.

Head of Steam is a partner in ‘Making a Mark’ – a project for schools and museums in the Tees Valley working with the National Portrait Gallery. Young people are producing writing inspired by railways, Darlington, and ghost and detective stories. The National Portrait Gallery will be lending contemporary photographs of Crime Writers by Nicola Kurtz as well as photographs of Victorian writers. Examples of students work will also be on display. Making a Mark is part of the Museums and Schools Programme fund-ed by Arts Council England.

North Road Works—Fifty Years of Memories between Saturday 14th January—Sunday 5th March in theTemporary Exhibition Gallery. 2016 marked the 50th anniversary of the closure of North Road Works after 103 years of making and repairing locomotives. To commemorate the anniversary, Head of Steam asked the local community to contribute their memories of the Works to an online archive. The exhibition brings together those memories as well as a range of photographs of the Works. Normal entrance fee.

Exposed, Saturday 11th November 2017 - Sunday 7th January 2018 11.00am - 3.30pm in the Temporary Exhibition Room

In 2015 a small collection of glass plate negatives were uncovered in the Museum of Hartlepool’s photographic archives. The previously unseen negatives are mug shots taken by Hartlepool Borough Police, a small force which served Hartlepool Headland from 1851 to 1947. Their faces have been exposed to the public for the first time by artist Jade Sweeting, Cleveland College of Art and Design. Normal entrance fee.
