2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the Class 55 Deltics’ introduction onto the East Coast Main Line. We’re working with the Deltic Preservation Society to celebrate with an event which brings all six surviving production Deltics to Shildon, where they will join the prototype. We’re working with Northern Rail on an event to name a Class 156 locomotive as ‘Timothy Hackworth’, and 1891-built Twizell will be visiting Locomotion from the Tanfield Railway for October half term.

During w/c October 31st, we’re expecting the arrival of a very special locomotive from Africa. Renowned artist and conservationist David Shepherd has donated the vehicle to the National Collection, and will be visiting Shildon later in the month to see the vehicle on display.

We’re giving visitors the chance to see the world of railways in miniature at Model Motion on Saturday March 10 and Sunday March 11. The event will bring together railway modellers from all over the North East, and will featuring a range of layouts on display - including ‘Steeltown’ by Shildon Model Railway Club and ‘Skaledale Bay’ by Ormesby Hall Model Railway Club. What’s more, there will be a selection of trade stands offer all you need to create your own model railway.

The Soho Engine Shed will be open to the public from Thursday September 6 to Sunday September 9th, as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days project. Visitors will have the chance to take a closer look at the exhibits inside the building – including the Shildon Works Bell and the Hackworth Plug Wheel.

Locomotion celebrates its 8th anniversary with the Annual Autumn Steam Gala on Saturday September 22nd and Sunday September 23rd.

Local Collectors Day event on Sunday February 10. We’re looking forward to seeing a wide range of displays – including miners’ lamps, football shirts, retro games consoles, mechanical bygones and more! Saturday February 16 and Sunday February 17, we’re offering visitors the chance to enjoy a one-to-one session spending 30 minutes driving a steam locomotive.  For the very first time visitors will be able to access the museum workshop from Saturday February 16 to Sunday February 24 and see A4 Pacific locomotive Dominion of Canada.

Between 1800 and 1830 a small group of North East businessmen and engineers created the modern railway. This week we celebrate this achievement. Happy Birthday Furness 20 Wednesday 21st August Britain’s oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive celebrates its 150th birthday. There will be free rides for visitors, and the Furness Railway Trust – which owns the engine – will feed the “old girl” a slice of birthday cake!

The Campaign for Drawing aims to get everyone – regardless of age or ability – involved in creative projects. Every October, The Campaign for Drawing organises The Big Draw – the largest festival in the world. From October 1 to 25, visitors to Locomotion will be invited to take part in our free community art activity suitable for all the family. To join in, simply draw your suggested view from a railway carriage on our giant picture!

MALLARD 75: THE GREAT GOODBYE

On July 3, 1938, the A4 class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new steam locomotive world speed record. That record still stands. The NRM is marking the 75th anniversary of Mallard’s achievement with Mallard 75, a series of commemorative events. The last chance to see all six surviving A4 locomotives together will take place at Locomotion: The NRM at Shildon from Saturday February 15 to Sunday February 23. Don’t miss our exciting programme of train rides, cab access, trade stands, talks, photographic events and more!

Locomotion is celebrating the Great Northern Railway at the Spring Steam Gala event on Sunday May 4 and Monday May 5. The event will feature GNR N2 No. 1744 in steam for cab access and passenger train rides. Visitors will also be able to see GNR Stirling Single No. 1, on display with its newly restored original tender, and GNR Atlantic C1 No. 251. Furness Railway No. 20 will also be in steam for the event. A range of traders will be at the event, offering railway and modelling goods.

This week, Locomotion has welcomed two new arrivals for display. GWR Pannier Tank No. 5775 arrived from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway for cosmetic restoration in our Conservation Workshop. The locomotive was featured in the 1970 British film drama ‘The Railway Children’.  We also welcomed S160 No. 2253. This ex-US Army Transportation Corps locomotive was built by Baldwins in Philadelphia, USA, in 1943. It is one of more than 4000 similar locomotives built between 1943 and 1946 to serve the US Military in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia.

GWR Pannier Tank No. 5775 is now in the Conservation Workshop for cosmetic restoration. The locomotive was featured in the 1970 British drama film ‘The Railway Children' starring Dinah Sheridan, Jenny Agutter, Sally Thomsett and Bernard Cribbins. Over the coming months, Locomotion’s Workshop team will restore the locomotive to the golden ochre livery from the film. We are looking for volunteers with skills in light engineering and cosmetic restoration to get involved with the No. 5775 restoration project.

First World War Rememberance Display: Members of the Friends of the National Railway Museum (North East) Branch have produced a small display which links into the nationwide activity around the centenary of the start of WW1. Available in the Shildon Memories case until late October, the display includes a railway book of remembrance, medals and posters.

Locomotion will welcome back a host of old friends to its 10th Annual Steam Gala on Saturday September 20th and Sunday September 21st. The planned line up of locomotives in steam for the event is:

  • Working replica of Stephenson’s Rocket
  • Haydock 0-6-0 Well Tank
  • Bellerophon
  • Hawthorn Leslie No. 2
  • Kitson No. 5
  • Furness Railway No. 20

GNR Atlantic No. 251 and LMS Black 5 No. 5000 will both be on static display outside the Collection Building. To celebrate the museum’s 10th birthday, visitors will be able to enjoy free steam train rides throughout the weekend. Cab access to locomotives in light steam, miniature train rides, trade stands, displays by heritage railways, talks, childrens’ activities, and a fair organ will also be available.

THE BIG DRAW: Throughout October, visitors to Locomotion will be invited to write on, colour in and draw a train made from giant cardboard boxes. This is Locomotion’s contribution to The Big Draw, an annual event organised by The Campaign for Drawing which aims to get everyone – regardless of age or ability – involved in creative projects.

We’re pleased to announce that LNER Class V2 No. 4771 Green Arrow arrived at Locomotion earlier this week, and is now on display in our Collection Building. No. 4771 Green Arrow was built in June 1936 for the London and North Eastern Railway at Doncaster Works, to a design by Sir Nigel Gresley. The first-built and only surviving member of its class, it was designed for hauling express freight and passenger trains, and named after an express freight service.

Details of the new model will be announced at a 3D Scan Party at Locomotion on Wednesday April 8. Everyone is welcome to join in – you’ll have the chance to see the 3D scan of the secret new model in progress; meet members of the Rapido and locomotionmodels.com teams; view a model railway layout display by Shildon Model Railway Club; and enjoy cab access to selected vehicles from the National Collection.

This year’s Spring Steam Gala will have an “East Coast Express” theme, with NER No. 1621, Stirling Single No. 1, GNR C1 No. 251 and LNER V2 No. 4771 Green Arrow all on display outside for the event. They’ll be joined by guest locomotive D49 Morayshire in steam for cab access and demonstration movements, plus FR20 in steam for passenger train rides. The main event takes place on Sunday May 3 and Monday May 4, where you’ll also find a host of trade stands offering a wide range of railway and modelling items. The preview day on Saturday May 2 will give enthusiasts the opportunity to watch our rail ops crew as they set up for the event, and the chance to take photographs of different locomotive line-ups on the sidings during the day.

From July 1, visitors to Locomotion will be able to enjoy a new tour which will reinterpret the historic buildings at the western end of the museum site. Each tour will incorporate the historic coal drops; the S&DR stables on the Black Boy Colliery branch; the 1857 goods shed and parcel office; Soho Shed; Hackworth House; and a visit to see the original Sans Pareil locomotive, built by Timothy Hackworth in 1829 to compete in the Rainhill Trials. Access to these buildings will only be available during heritage tours.

We’re delighted to announce that our Learning Team have been awarded the Sandford Award. This is an independently judged, quality assured assessment of education programme at heritage sites and museums across the UK. Locomotion was also the winner in the Best Event Durham category recently at The Journal Culture Awards 2014. The award recognises the contribution that our Mallard 75: Great Goodbye event made to North East culture.

Our 11th Annual Steam Gala takes place on Saturday September 19 & Sunday September 20. This year’s event is themed around WWII, with a locomotive line up including a relevant class of locomotive from each of the major railway companies. Guest locomotives SR No. 777 Sir Lamiel and WD No. 75254 will be in steam for the event, along with FR No. 20. Visitors will be able to enjoy cab access to locomotives in light steam, passenger train rides, miniature railway rides, trade stands, children’s art activities and more.

We’re marking the 60th anniversary of the Deltic prototype’s allocation to Speke Shed with a very special event on Saturday October 24th and Sunday October 25th. Our Diamond Deltic event, supported by Locomotionmodels.com, will feature DP1 on display on our events apron, and joined by special guests 55002 Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, D9009 Alycidon and 55019 Royal Highland Fusilier. Visitors will be able to enjoy passenger train rides with 55002 or D9009, plus cab access to the other Deltics. Shildon Model Railway Club will be running a layout with Deltic models, and selected trade stands will also be in attendance.

We’re relaunching the monthly newsletter with information on events and activities at Locomotion: The NRM at Shildon.

The nationwide Heritage Open Days project takes place from Thursday September 8 to Sunday September 11 this year. As part of our offer for this event, our Museum Assistants have developed a special heritage themed tour designed for visitors who wish to learn about the growth and decline of railway industry and its impact on towns and their people. Tours will be available at 11am and 2pm daily during the Heritage Open Days project.
