K1 update 10th May 2022

We have worked on the K1 for 6 days since the last report.

On the boiler/firebox all of the stubborn foundation ring rivets have now been removed and removal of the throat plate/barrel rivets continues. A start has also been made on removing the side stay heads to the steel platework that is to be replaced and on burning out the outer wrapper/throatplate rivets. Further progress has also been made on removing the roof stays that are to be replaced. More needle-gunning has been carried out to the interior of the barrel - this very time consuming job is now nearing completion. In addition 5 of the 9 palm stays have been needle gunned in preparation for inspection and NDT.

On the mechanical side the intermediate draw gear and tender brake linkage have been removed and cleaned ahead of inspection and NDT.

Work on the cab roof also continues - largely in the form of rust removal and priming. This now tends to be a late afternoon/early evening job for Angie and me but if anyone who likes that sort of thing would like to take is on as a project I would be delighted to hear from you.

Many thanks to Angie Buxton, Lizzy Fielding, Steve Gibson, Robby Ellis and Rolly Bingham who have all worked on the loco since the last update.
