J72 Wensleydale Railway Event

On Sunday 1st November, patron and working members enjoyed a special day out using the J72 for a full round trip of the line.

The engine carried a wreath in memory of NELPG member Colin Manuel from Leyburn. In June, Colin had donated a significant sum towards the repair of the locomotive’s cylinder and he had hoped to travel behind the J72 on the line following its return to service in October. Regrettably, this wish could not be fulfilled, and to thank the family, Colin’s sister Margaret Stevenson was invited as a guest for the day. The photograph at Leeming Bar shows her handing over a commemorative wreath to driver Fred Ramshaw for attachment to 69023 prior to departure of the train.

From a misty Leeming Bar, by Newton-le-Willows we were in bright warm sunshine. Unfortunately, when we returned it was back into the mist, which got thicker and the rain started as we continued through Scruton to Northallerton West.
