The K1 boiler was lifted from the frames on Wednesday 27th October at Carnforth, examination of the boiler and locomotive will now commence in the following areas:-
- Boiler - Firebox stays and foundation ring, as well as a full retube - with remedial actions as required
- Loco frames - examination of the rear driving wheel axleboxes and other mechanical repairs as required
- Tender - replacement of the tender tyres with examination and attention to the axlebox bearings as required
The locomotive frames where transported to Hopetown Carriage Works, Darlington and shunted into the workshop on Friday 5th November 2011. Work on cleaning the frames was completed that day in preparation for a full mechanical examination over the coming weeks. We should see the loco frames lifted to remove the driving wheels before repairs commence.
The 8th November working party started to dismantle the locomotive at Hopetown.
The fractured RHS cylinder as reported elsewhere on the website is now at Cast Iron Welding http://www.castironwelding.co.uk/ and after a full NDT examination repairs have now started. The welding repairs should be complete in January 2011, the cylinder will then go to a for machining before refitting to the locomotive frames in spring 2011.
Once the boiler repairs and locomotive mechanicals repairs are complete the boiler will be refitted to the frames and following assembly the locomotive will return to traffic for the summer of 2011.
