A knock was reported on the Q6 last week (29th April - 1st May) and it was stopped at Newbridge for investigation. It was decided to bring the loco back to Grosmont for a full exam.
Due to the busy NYMR gala program and a shortage of engine crew it took nearly a week to find a crew and a spare path, but late afternoon on the 5th May the engine arrived back at Grosmont.
The investigation started over the weekend of 7th/8th. A working party removing the side rods on the 11th and another working party remove the driving wheels using the wheel drop on Friday 13th. With the wheelset out and the horn guides exposed, the nature of the problem has become clearer. There is excessive wear on the driving axleboxs. Measurments are being made on order to understand the problem. The driving axleboxes have been removed from site for further inspection and repair.
