K1 update 29th March 2022

We have worked on the K1 for 6 days since the last report.

Inside the firebox the heads have been burnt off most of the foundation ring rivets - these are now ready to be knocked out and the stay heads have been ground off the copper side of all throat plate stays.

A start has been made on removing the palm stays and more needle gunning of the barrel interior has been carried out (not much more to do now).

On the frames more LH cylinder bolts have been checked, most of which are satisfactory. The cylinder casting around the bolt holes is being needle gunned, die pen tested and painted as we go, and where the existing bolts are being retained, new washers and nuts are being fitted. The current count is 16 to be retained, 16 to replace with 10 left to check.

The loco steam brake piston has been removed (rings and gudgeon pin to replace) and a start has been made in removing the loco brake weigh shaft in order to rectify excessive play in the supporting bushes.

Away from Carnforth work on the new slide bars being undertaken under contract by Dormer Engineering has been delayed owing to a machine failure. Work should however restart later this week.
